Mehdi Torfi is an Iranian filmmaker and storyteller born on May 3, 1984, in Ahvaz, Iran. He holds a Bachelor of Law degree and started his filmmaking career in the year 2000 after graduating from the State Academy of Cinema. Torfi then joined the Iranian Youth Cinema Association, where he began his journey in directing and scriptwriting. Over his career, he has produced over twenty feature films and documentaries, and has also written, researched, and directed two documentary television series.
Torfi is a distinguished member of the Iranian Documentary Cinema Directors Guild and the Iranian Short Film Directors Association, designated with the cinema system number 9807339 in Khane Cinema as of 2020. Additionally, he is a respected lecturer in film directing and screenwriting at several film and art institutions.
Beyond film, Torfi is recognized for his contribution to literature. He is the author of approximately 30 literary short stories, earning publication in various Iranian magazines and newspapers.
His works have received international acclaim, evidenced by appearances and awards at multiple film festivals. Notable achievements include winning the Black Pearl at the Abu Dhabi World Festival in 2010, a silver medal from the 32nd Ebens Festival in Austria, and a pole statue for best film at the Finnish World Festival in 2016. Muscat Film Festival awarded him the Silver Dagger in 2018, and he won best film at the Algerian Film Festival (Al Bawaba). Moreover, Torfi has participated in other international festivals, including those in Sweden, Belgium, Bulgaria, Algeria, and Tunisia.
